Fun Ideas for Mother's Day Mini Photo Sessions

Want to get mom something extra special this year? Photographs are truly remarkable in that not only do they make for priceless memories, but also equally priceless gifts. Whether you're a traditional mom or raising a child on your own, or you're the favourite aunt, or you're a great-great-grandmother, this is your time to shine in photographic form. Here are some of my ideas for a Mother's Day mini photo session.

Flower garden

A classic for a very good reason! Flowers can make both you and the scenery glow with all of the love you have to share as a mom. Green is also a universal colour in that it can make anyone look amazing in photos, no matter what stage of your life you're in or the kind of clothing you're wearing for your photoshoot. Tulips, irises, crocuses, daffodils—the list goes on for blooming plants this time of the year. Spring is truly the season of flowers. Let's spend Mother's Day celebrating you enjoying these floral delights.

Tea party or picnic—indoors or out

Who doesn't love a cup of tea and cookies (or food, for that matter)? There's a lot to love about having a meal alfresco—something about the air outside adds a sense of freshness to the food you eat, and you can be surrounded by as much green and flowers as you'd like. Having a tea party or a picnic with your family can also make for a fun photoshoot. Maybe there's a tradition you all have while creating this kind of a setup?

Whatever you decide to eat or savour, be sure to ask your photographer to capture such moments while being present about them all. I can not only capture the making-of process but also the fruits of your day's labour together in the form of this fun family activity.

Relax with mom inside

If for any reason you'd rather not leave your home, there are plenty of things you can do inside. Grab a board or card game, arts and crafts, or paper and markers and do something special with mom, for mom. Maybe you have a traditional brunch you all enjoy together, or a favourite backyard game you all can't get enough of playing? However you decide to go about your more indoorsy photoshoot, you can always talk to your photographer beforehand—planning is a big part of what we do!

Match mom from head to toe

Some really cute photo ideas I've seen include family members who dress in similar colours to mom's style of choice. You don't have to dress exactly like mom, granted; just follow the colour palette of choice as closely as you can. Spring wardrobes are all about airflow and comfort; t-shirts and jeans, dresses, and loose-fitting coats are all good ideas for any kind of weather and location options. For more dressing tips or if you're still feeling stuck, you can refer to my previous blog post "How to Get Ready for a Family Photoshoot".

Mom's furry best friend

Does mom love animals a lot? Are you more of a dog mom than a typical one? Your favourite fur baby (or two) should at least be in the photos! Whether for Mother's Day or any day of the year, having a pet family member in the picture can make for some wholesome and unique photos. Maybe mom loves chatting with her bird, or adores playing catch with her pooch. Bring her furry, feathery, or even scaly best friend along so everyone's company can be enjoyed.

Get your little ones involved

For some moms it's not truly Mother's Day without including the kids! A lot of the above ideas can help make their time spent in front of a camera less like a formal photoshoot and more like a fun day with mom. You can make a lot more fond memories by spending time with your children for a Mother's Day mini session as opposed to being the one calling all of the shots. Let me take care of the hard part of photographing your kids in their element, and you have fun joining them.

Get other moms involved

Some of the most priceless moments I've taken for clients have involved different generations within the same family spending time together. If you're able to involve your grandma and even great-grandma in your photoshoot, do it. You never know when this sort of opportunity will come again. Why not make it now?

Whatever idea you decide to use for your Mother's Day mini session, you can't go wrong with having a professional photographer by your side to make that kind of magical day happen. Give me a call and let's see if we can put something fun for everyone together. I genuinely look forward to meeting you, mom, and your family.
