Love is more precious than ever now, no matter what your stage of life may currently be. With many changes happening practically every day at this point in our lives, it's worth pausing for a moment to really take a look at who your valentine is this year and cherishing the time you have together now. If this is a big year for you, it might be worthwhile to get professional photos taken of your Valentine's Day. Here are some fun Valentine's Day photo session ideas for you to consider.

1. Reenact Your First Date Together (As Best You Can)

What's more romantic than a Valentine's Day date? How about your very first one together with your significant other, your fiance/fiancee, or your boy/girlfriend of several years? Try to reenact your first date together and get photos taken of the occasion. Even if you can't reenact every single detail together, you can still find alternatives and ways to celebrate this special event. It could be as simple as taking a walk in the park, or as detailed as dressing up and having a romantic dinner by candlelight at home using food from the restaurant you first went to together.

2. Celebrate an Anniversary Milestone

Valentine's Day for some is a milestone worth celebrating. Going back to the first date example, maybe this is when you did just that, or maybe you asked your current spouse to marry you on this holiday. Perhaps this year is a genuine anniversary milestone such as 5, or 20, or even 60? Whatever milestone you may have awaiting you, Valentine's Day is a perfect opportunity to honour that kind of a special occasion. And what better way to remember this milestone than with photographs taken by a professional?

3. Picnic Indoors or in the Yard

If you're feeling up to it, why not add some colour and liveliness to your Valentine's Day with some delicious picnic food while getting your photos taken? You can enjoy your backyard, or if it's raining outside, spread a blanket out in the living room and stay in while enjoying your favourite kind of picnic food (or your favourite meal together, if you prefer). Maybe that was your first date as well?

4. Enjoy Each Other's Valentine Traditions

Maybe you loved making each other valentine cards before you became an official couple, or you both enjoy baking each other festive goodies, or you both share an activity on this day. Whatever your Valentine's traditions may be, it's always, always worth adding your own personalities to the photo session by enjoying them together.

5. Make a Proposal More Epic

Do you feel this is the right time to pop that question to your girlfriend or boyfriend? However many years you've spent together, if you feel now is the best year to make a marriage proposal, a photo session can take that big moment to the next level. Hiring a professional photographer can truly make this kind of a proposal an epic life event; they can help you with the planning part every step of the way.

Looking for non-romantic ideas for a Valentine's Day photo session? You're in luck—I have some ideas for those too! Check out my blog post "Valentine’s Day Photo Ideas that Don’t Have to Include Romance".

Some last minute tips

  • Be present in each other's company. Make it a point to ditch the phone or other distractions and really take in the moments you have here and now with your valentine. I'm sure they'll appreciate the gesture.

  • Roll with the punches if things don't go according to plan. Maybe you planned for an outdoor session and it's raining—you can still do plan B, which is to get dressed for a rainy day walk together and go outside anyway. Whatever happens, happens, so trust in your photographer to get some great shots.

  • Have fun and relax. This will make for some genuine photographs that you can both enjoy post-session.

  • Let romance sweep you away if you're both feeling it! Swoop in for a random kiss or a surprise hug while you're enjoying your choice of activity together. You can then reminisce over these certain moments in the photo results afterwards.
